Facebook, as we all know, is the world’s leading social networking website. The social networking company has gone even more social by going local in August 2010 with the launch of a new feature called Facebook Places, a new location sharing service. This application is primarily for mobile phone users.
What can Facebook Places do for you? Simple, you can share your location with your buddies and also find out where they are located. Facebook knows pretty well about what going local means to social networking.
Users can check into existing places, add new places and also tag people who are with them. When a user of Facebook checks in to a place, an update will automatically be published to his or her friends’ News Feeds.
With this feature, users who are new to a particular place can find anything they are looking for. For instance, a Japanese tourist who is looking for a local Japanese specialty restaurant can log into Places and find where the restaurant is located.
The world’s most popular social networking company was still not content with this. It has further enhanced this location-based functionality feature by adding new sections such as Deals in November 2010. The Deals feature connects bring millions of local and small business advertisers to the social network. With this service, businesses can promote their deals to their existing customers (fan base) and also tap news ones. There are different types of deals which are beneficial to both customers and businesses – individual deals, loyalty deals, friend deals and charity deals.
With mobile usage growing day by day, lots of companies are launching their applications which users can log on to using their iphones or android phones. Facebook has also launched an iphone app for Places for convenience of its users.
Thanks to the brand image, the feature benefits and Facebook’s businesses-friendly policies, more and more merchants are joining Places with lots of new offers and opportunities for everyone. A lot of restaurants, supermarkets, bars, and coffee shops have registered in Places. With Facebook’s Places in place, locating anything anywhere has become easier than ever.
Foursquare, a social network, also offers this feature where users share their geolocation data via mobile phones. However, Facebook’s formidable market position is expected to place it ahead of its competitors in this arena.
Facebook Places is now available in Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Canada, Japan, United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, South Africa, Finland, Ireland, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, India and Philippines, and is continuing to expand its global footprint.
